Zimmerman was born in Olathe, Kansas, in 1973. At 15 he began three formative years of high-school art classes with Pal Wright, Elizabeth Grandma Laytons first and last drawing instructor. In 1996 he received his BFA in interdisciplinary art from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where he studied under Roger Shimomura and Maria Velasco. He spends the bulk of his creative time exploring diverse forms of human geography, land use, and outdoor culture that are overlooked, undervalued, or under the radar. Recent sites include The White Mountain Apache Reservation, the exurban fringes of Kansas City, wilderness areas, and outdoor party spots. Since 1996 he has lived in Brooklyn with his wife, the artist and musician Laura Ortman. Together they play in the experimental folk-rock band The Dust Dive. Their debut full-length album, Asleep or Awake Walk, will be released by free103point9 in late September. His photographs have appeared in The Village Voice, Artforum, The Landmarks of New York, Volume IV (forthcoming), and Pasa Tiempo, among other publications, and in group shows at Dam Stuhltrager Gallery and CBGB's 313 Gallery.
