Matt Mikas is a sound artist with a history of involvement with microradio. A sonic anthropologist, Mikas uses turntables alternately as a historian and performer. Mikas’s recent project "Interactive Audio Response Kit" is a musical composition and listening tool created for two identical LPs.
Mikas’s performance-based work was featured as part of free103point9’s “On The Air” project at White Box, New York for PERFORMA05; at the Philadelphia ICA for NAMAC’s conference “Taking Liberties” (2005); at the 2004 Gwangju Biennale, South Korea. "Of The Bridge," a collaboration with Matt Bua and Tom Roe, premiered in “Brooklyn!” (2001) at the Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art, sampling the Williamsburg Bridge and Sonny Rollins (who often rehearsed there). Mikas curated the sound program for Dave Hickey’s “Ultralounge” (2000) at the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa.
Matt Mikas, with Galen Joseph-Hunter and Tom Roe, co-founded the non-profit media arts organization that is now free103point9 in 2002. Greg Anderson, Violet Hopkins, and Tom Roe founded free103point9 as a microradio collective in Brooklyn, New York in 1997.
